Black Down

The walk up Black Down rewards you with proper views across Warwickshire - you can see for miles on a clear day, and the surrounding countryside rolls away in all directions. It's not dramatic or towering; at 650 feet it's more of a gentle rise than a proper peak, but that's rather the point. The summit itself is just a field with a trig point, nothing fancy, but walkers genuinely get something out of the climb because the effort-to-view ratio works in your favour.

It takes about 45 minutes each way from Priors Hardwick, so you're looking at a couple of hours all in. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring the local rambling groups out in force. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might grumble on the way down. History buffs won't find much to detain them up here, but if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Coleman's Hill or Hill Farm are both within spitting distance - it's a straightforward morning or afternoon outing that breaks up your stay without requiring a full day's commitment.

Free to visit, obviously. The land is accessible to walkers, though you'll want to check locally before you go. Best visited in spring or autumn when the light sits lower and makes the views actually sing. Summer can be a bit hazy, and winter muddy. Not life-changing, but if you're camping in the area it'd be daft to miss it.
