Bitts Park Bandstand

There's a proper Victorian bandstand sitting in Bitts Park just off the main drag in Carlisle, and it's one of those things you'd walk past without thinking twice unless someone told you to look up. Built in the 1880s, it's all ornate ironwork and a bit of faded grandeur - the kind of structure that once meant something to the town when brass bands would gather here on summer evenings and half of Carlisle would turn out to listen.

It's a walking thing, really. You can't go inside the bandstand itself, but it makes a solid focal point for a stroll through the park. The whole space gets the afternoon sun if you time it right, and there's decent green around it. If you've got kids, they'll have a wander for ten minutes then want ice cream, but for anyone with even a passing interest in Victorian civic pride, it's worth the detour from the town centre.

The park's free to access, and you could comfortably spend half an hour here without breaking a sweat. Carlisle's got enough going on - the cathedral, the castle - that you'd pair this with other bits rather than make a solo trip. If you're based at Thornfield Camping Cabins just outside town, it's an easy drive in for a morning potter about. The bandstand photographs well if you're that way inclined, and on a quiet weekday you'll practically have the place to yourself.
