Bitham Lake

A decent stretch of water just outside Salisbury where you can actually see waterfowl doing their thing rather than hiding in the reeds. Bitham Lake is the sort of place that rewards a slow walk round the perimeter - nothing flashy, just proper countryside with decent views across the water to farmland beyond.

The lake itself draws birdwatchers year-round. Winter brings visiting ducks and geese, while spring and summer are better if you want to spot resident species without the crowds. It's walkable but not dramatic - you're not going to get the Instagram moment, but you will get peace and a functioning bit of the English landscape doing what it's meant to do.

Families with young children might manage half an hour before the novelty wears off. Walkers and birdwatchers will find it a solid addition to a Salisbury day out, especially if you're already exploring the surrounding downland. The nearest proper base is Marshwood Farm Camping, about five and a half miles away, which gives you a decent countryside retreat without being miles from anywhere.

Go early in the day if you want it quiet. There's no formal visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared - bring binoculars if you're into birds, comfortable shoes if you're walking the full circuit. Free access, no hassle. It's the sort of place that works best when you're not expecting too much - a genuine pause in a day, rather than a destination in itself.
