You'd be forgiven for walking straight past Birtley Library without realizing it's worth a stop. Stanley's not exactly known for architectural showstoppers, but this place punches above its weight as a proper community hub in County Durham. It's a functioning public library - so books, computers, quiet study areas - but also the kind of place where locals actually gather. The staff know their stuff, and there's usually someone who can point you toward local history resources if you're interested in what the area was doing two centuries back.

If you're camping at Beamish Holiday Park or staying at the glossier Beamish Glamping just down the road, Birtley makes sense as a rainy afternoon stop. You're maybe 20 minutes away, and it breaks up a day of museum visits nicely. Families with kids will find the usual reading corners and activity boards - nothing fancy, but functional. Walkers and history types might appreciate its location on the edge of Stanley; you can work a library visit into a loop walk without losing time.

It's free to use, though you'll likely need to register if you want to borrow anything. Opening hours are sensible for a weekday (9:30-17:00 Monday to Thursday) but early closing on Saturday means you'd have to be organized. Half an hour is plenty if you're just browsing or grabbing information.
