Birstall Nature Reserve

The reserve spreads across 47 acres of proper countryside, just outside Leicester. You get wetland, grassland, and woodland all in one go - the kind of place where you actually notice the seasons changing. Paths wind through without being fussy about it; there's a boardwalk section over the marshier bits if you want to stay dry, or you can wander the grass trails if you're up for muddier boots.

This is genuinely good for families with younger kids. They'll spot dragonflies in summer, frogs and newts if you time it right, and there's usually enough to keep them occupied for a couple of hours without it feeling like a slog. Birdwatchers will do well here - you get the common stuff reliably, and rarer visitors show up depending on the season. If you're into photography, the light across the wetland in early morning is worth the early start.

The reserve is free to access, though opening times aren't always obvious online, so check before you head over. Allow two to three hours for a decent walk without rushing. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon break from a caravan park base - both Hill Top Caravan Park and Reas Glamping Retreat at Zillahs Spinney are within five or six miles, making it an easy detour. A genuine pocket of nature that doesn't demand much of you, but rewards paying attention.
