Birchen Park

The woodland at Birchen Park spreads across Shropshire like a proper working forest - the kind where you'll actually see timber operations alongside footpaths, not just heritage trails behind rope barriers. It's honest stuff: mature trees, clear air, the occasional sound of machinery in the distance reminding you this isn't a museum piece.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths wind through beech and oak, and there's enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other visitors even on decent weather weekends. It's the sort of place where an hour turns into three because you keep finding another path worth exploring. Kids won't get bored if they're the type who like scrambling over fallen logs and spotting wildlife, but if they need designated play areas, look elsewhere.

The drive from Kidderminster takes barely twenty minutes, which makes it a solid addition to a week based at Lodge Coppice or Bank Farm - both just over three miles away. If you're already staying at either of those parks, Birchen is close enough for a morning outing without eating into your holiday schedule. Wheathill, further out at 6.5 miles, works less well for a quick visit but fine if you're planning a proper day walk.

No real facilities to speak of - bring water, wear proper boots. The forest doesn't charge entry that we know of, and there's no hard time limit on how long you stay. Early morning is best if you want solitude; midweek mornings even better.
