Birch Wood

The woodland around Birch Wood near Ellesmere is a proper tonic if you're after a straightforward forest walk without the crowds. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - dense trees, decent paths, and barely another soul in sight on a weekday afternoon.

The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, which means it's boggy in winter but lovely and springy underfoot come late spring. You're walking through genuine mixed woodland here, not some manicured nature reserve. Birch, oak, and pine all feature, and if you time it right for April or May, the light filtering through the canopy is something special.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. It's not a destination attraction - there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - but as a two or three-mile circular walk from Ellesmere, it slots perfectly into a caravan park break. Neither Fernwood nor Stanmore Hall is far, so it's a sensible morning or late afternoon amble if the weather holds. Allow ninety minutes without rushing.

Kids under eight might lose interest fairly quickly; there's nothing interactive, no play equipment, just trees. Teenagers and adults after a quiet leg-stretcher will find it worthwhile. The trails are sound underfoot but occasionally muddy - proper boots make sense, especially after rain.

Go off-season if you can. Spring's ideal, but summer brings midges that'll drive you mad. Free to access, and that's the point - it's unpretentious woodland walking without the tourist machinery.
