Binnein Beag

The walk up Binnein Beag takes you into proper mountain country, the kind of place where the weather changes four times before lunch and the views across the grey-blue lochs justify every muddy step. It's a Munro, which means it hits 3,000 feet, and from Kinlochleven you're looking at a solid day out - probably four to five hours depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

What you get is raw Highland scenery. No visitor centre, no facilities, just you and the ridge with the Mamore mountains sprawling around you. On a clear day the perspective is tremendous; on a dreich one it's moody and atmospheric in equal measure. The approach terrain is steep and rocky in places, so this isn't a casual wander - proper boots matter.

This is for hikers with some experience under their belt, folk who want to tick off a Munro without the crowds you'd find on Ben Nevis. It's not a family ramble, though determined older kids who've done hills before might manage it. The nearest town, Kinlochleven, is compact and has what you need - cafes, shops, parking. Blackwater Hostel sits only a few miles away if you're planning to stay local; their campsite and glamping setup makes sense for a mountain-focused break in the area.

Go in decent weather. The ridge is exposed, and once you're up there, shelter is precisely nowhere. Summer months are your safest bet, though the Highlands can surprise you any time of year.
