Bincombe Beeches Nature Reserve

The beech trees here are genuinely ancient - gnarled trunks that look like they've been around since before the Norman conquest, stretching up through dense woodland. Bincombe Beeches is a proper walk rather than a stroll, with paths threading through what feels like a cathedral of green. You're close to Crewkerne, right on the Dorset-Somerset border, and it's the sort of place that rewards a couple of hours of proper exploration rather than a quick visit.

Walkers will get the most from this. The woodland canopy is thick enough that even in summer it stays cool, and the floor's mostly soft with generations of leaf mulch underfoot. Spring brings wild garlic and bluebells; autumn turns the whole place copper and gold. There's something almost meditative about it - no crowds, no noise except birds. Families with older kids who can manage uneven terrain will enjoy it; toddlers might find the walking tedious.

If you're based at one of the glamping spots nearby - Esme's Escape or Wytch Wood are closest - this makes a solid morning outing before heading to coastal attractions further south. It's free to wander, though you'll want proper walking boots and at least two hours. Go early or late in the day if you want any chance of solitude. The reserve isn't flashy, but that's precisely why it works. No facilities on-site, so bring water.
