Big Island

The forest at Big Island sits just outside Penrith, a proper woodland walk that rewards you with decent views across the Eden Valley once you've done the climbing. It's not a destination in itself - more of a companion to a park stay in the area - but it's the kind of place that fills a morning well enough if the weather holds.

The walk takes you through mixed woodland with a stream running alongside parts of the route. It's moderately steep in sections, so bring proper footwear. Most people manage it in two hours return, though you can dawdle longer if you've got the time. The forest floor gets boggy after rain, which means it's actually better visited in drier months - autumn or spring rather than deep winter.

Families with older kids will get something out of it. Younger ones might find the initial climb tedious and the reward not quite worth the effort. Walkers staying at Crossfells or Howdy Glamping - both top-rated spots nearby - will find this a natural addition to their itinerary without needing to drive far. The real appeal is combining it with other Lake District walks rather than treating it as a standalone trip.

Free access, no facilities to speak of, so pack what you need. Go early if you're visiting in peak season, though it rarely gets rammed. The views at the top are pleasant rather than spectacular, but the woodland itself is quiet and feels properly removed from the main tourist routes around Penrith.
