Big Fella

Big Fella is a contemporary art gallery just outside Wigton, and it's the sort of place that catches you off guard - in a good way. The gallery specializes in large-scale sculpture and installation work, which means you're not tiptoeing around precious ceramics or squinting at small paintings behind glass. The whole thing feels refreshingly unpretentious.

The space itself is generous, with high ceilings that actually let the work breathe. You'll spend anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours depending on how you engage with the pieces, though there's no pressure either way. It's genuinely free to visit, which removes any guilt about a quick look-round if you're just passing through.

Families with older kids will get more from it than those with toddlers - there's something quite contemplative about the work here, not the interactive, touch-everything sort of gallery that keeps under-fives entertained. Artists and anyone interested in contemporary practice will find it worthwhile. History buffs, less so.

If you're staying at Solway Holiday Park or Stanwix Park - both within spitting distance - it's an easy addition to a day out. North Lakes Country Park is only four miles away, so you could easily string together a Wigton-area morning. The town itself is a proper working place rather than a tourist showstopper, which is part of its charm. Worth the detour if you're in the region, though don't rearrange your whole trip around it.
