Bickley Coppice

Walk into Bickley Coppice and you're immediately swallowed by oak and birch - the kind of proper woodland that makes you forget Shrewsbury's only a short drive away. It's a modest forest by Shropshire standards, but that's rather the point. There's no visitor centre, no car park drama, just quiet paths threading through mature trees and the occasional clearing where light actually reaches the forest floor.

This is walkers' territory, pure and simple. The coppice woodland feels like it hasn't been heavily managed, which gives it character - fallen logs become natural seats, undergrowth is thick enough to suggest real wildlife lives here. Spring is magnificent if bluebells are your thing. Autumn turns the whole place bronze and gold. In winter, when trees are bare, you can actually see where the paths lead.

Unless you've got serious forest credentials or a very patient toddler, two hours maximum is realistic. It's good for stretching legs between other Shropshire activities, not a full day's event. The paths are manageable but can be muddy after rain - wellies are worth considering.

If you're based at Royal Hill Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a decent morning or late afternoon excursion without travelling far. It won't set your heart racing, but it's the kind of place that grows on you - somewhere to breathe properly and hear yourself think.
