Bewley Castle

The ruins of Bewley Castle sit on a ridge overlooking the Eden Valley, and frankly, they're more impressive from a distance than up close. Built in the 12th century as a Norman stronghold, what remains today are fragmentary stone walls and earthworks - enough to give you a sense of the place's former defensive importance, but not enough to spend more than half an hour exploring.

You'll get the most from Bewley if you're already walking in the area rather than making a dedicated trip from Appleby-in-Westmorland. The remains don't require any entry fee (there's nothing to collect one at, really), and the views across the Pennines are the main draw - genuinely lovely on a clear day. The walk up isn't punishing, though the ground can be boggy depending on recent weather.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's Norman origins and its role in defending the border region, but younger children will likely find it a bit sparse. It's the sort of place that works well as part of a longer ramble rather than a standalone stop.

If you're staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park or Howdy Glamping, this sits comfortably within striking distance for a morning or afternoon walk. The nearest proper facilities are in Appleby, a charming market town about four miles away. Go for the walk and the landscape; don't expect to find a castle worth photographing.
