Berriew Woodland Walk

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal visitor attraction, Berriew Woodland Walk is the sort of place you stumble upon when exploring the lanes around Welshpool. The path winds through native broadleaf woodland with decent tree coverage - oak, ash, beech - and there's a pleasant stream running through it. You're looking at an easy 30 to 45 minutes depending on how much you dawdle and whether you explore the side paths.

It's free and accessible, no gates or barriers stopping you from having a wander. The ground can be boggy after rain, so waterproofs aren't optional in winter. Best visited in autumn when the light's coming through the canopy properly, or spring when you've got bluebells and bird song. Summer can feel a bit enclosed and damp under all that foliage.

For families with young kids it works well - not taxing enough to cause complaints, interesting enough to hold attention for an hour. Walkers will find it pleasant rather than spectacular; it's not a destination walk, more a worthwhile diversion if you're staying nearby. History buffs won't find much here, but nature types will appreciate the stream ecology and the chance to identify local trees.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks around Welshpool - Maes Yr Afon or Severn Caravan Resort are closest - this makes a solid half-morning activity before heading into town for lunch. It's the kind of walk that costs nothing and asks nothing of you except decent footwear.
