Bernera Beach

The drive out to Bernera Beach feels longer than the four miles from Kyle of Lochalsh would suggest, winding through moorland that grows progressively emptier. Then you round a corner and suddenly there's a proper sweep of golden sand facing the Sound of Raasay, with Raasay island lounging across the water like it's got nowhere to be.

This is a beach for people who actually want to get away from things rather than just saying they have. The sand is firm underfoot, excellent for walking, and the light here - especially in the late afternoon - has that particular Scottish quality of being almost unreasonably beautiful. On a decent day you can pick out the mountains of Applecross across the bay.

Walkers absolutely thrive here. The beach connects to longer coastal paths, so you can make a proper afternoon of it without feeling trapped. Families with young kids will find it accessible and spacious, though there's no facilities whatsoever, so come prepared. Don't expect crowds or cafés. What you get is silence and good sand.

If you're staying at Reraig Caravan & Camping just up the coast, this becomes an easy evening expedition rather than a pilgrimage. Park rangers or locals can give directions - the beach isn't signposted, which is part of why it stays quiet. Free to visit, obviously. Allow at least an hour, two if the light's good and you've got time to spare.
