Benstoken Coppice

Ancient woodland doesn't come much quieter than this small coppice tucked away in the Worcestershire countryside. Benstoken Coppice sits just outside Malvern, offering a proper slice of traditional English forest that feels miles from anywhere despite being easily accessible.

Walking through here is like stepping back in time. The trees show clear signs of historical coppicing - that old practice of cutting back wood every few years to encourage new growth. Oak and hazel dominate, creating a lovely canopy that filters the light into dappled patterns on the forest floor.

Bird watchers will have a field day. I spotted nuthatches, treecreepers and heard the distinctive drumming of woodpeckers during my visit. Spring brings bluebells carpeting the ground, though it's never as crowded as the famous bluebell woods that draw coach loads.

Families with young children might find it a bit limited - there are no marked trails or facilities, just quiet woodland paths that peter out after twenty minutes or so. But for anyone wanting a peaceful wander without the crowds, it's well worth the short detour from Malvern.
