Benderg Bay

The inlet at Benderg Bay is one of those quiet corners of County Down that doesn't announce itself loudly. It's a nature reserve tucked into the shoreline near Downpatrick, where mudflats and saltmarsh create proper habitat for wading birds and the sort of wildlife that doesn't care much for crowds.

What you're looking at here is a working ecosystem rather than a manicured attraction. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching - curlews, oystercatchers, and various gulls work the flats depending on the season and tide. The walk itself isn't strenuous, more of a gentle potter along the water's edge with decent views across the bay. Low tide gives you access to more of the foreshore; high tide compresses things a bit but makes for better light if you're photographing.

This suits walkers and twitchers far more than families wanting a day's entertainment. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking when they can go home, unless they're genuinely into spotting things. The reserve is free to visit and open year-round, though autumn and winter bring the most active bird populations.

If you're basing yourselves at Castle Ward Caravan Park or Coneyisland - both solid four-star options - Benderg fits neatly into a wider Strangford Lough afternoon. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Expect wind, good air, and the sort of stillness that makes you remember why you left the city.
