Belas Knap Long Barrow

Walking up to Belas Knap feels like stepping backwards four and a half thousand years. This Neolithic long barrow sits on a hilltop near Winchcombe, commanding views across the Cotswolds that alone justify the climb. The stone burial chamber is still largely intact - you can actually walk through the entrance and into the main passage, where Bronze Age families once laid their dead to rest.

It's a proper workout getting there. The footpath from Winchcombe takes about forty minutes on foot, climbing steadily through farmland before reaching the barrow itself. The site is completely open and free, with no visitor centre or facilities - it's just you, four thousand years of history, and sheep. That's either brilliant or underwhelming depending on your tolerance for bare archaeology.

The stone structure itself is oddly moving. The false entrance at the front still confuses visitors - our guide explained the Neolithic builders designed it that way deliberately, probably to prevent grave robbers. Whether that actually worked is another question. Families with competent walkers aged ten and up will find it genuinely interesting. Younger kids might lose patience once they realise there's no gift shop and nowhere to sit down.

Visiting Belas Knap works perfectly if you're based at one of the nearby Cotswolds caravan parks - Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club sits just over four miles away. Pair it with walks around Sudeley Castle or a pint in the village. Go early on weekdays to avoid the tourist traffic from Tewkesbury and Cheltenham.
