Bel Tor

The walk up Bel Tor rewards you with one of Dartmoor's cleanest, sharpest views - you're standing on a granite outcrop at 1,100 feet looking across moorland that stretches for miles. It's a proper accessible peak, nothing technical, but the scramble over the last bit of rocks does require a bit of care if you're bringing younger kids.

From South Brent, it's a straightforward trek across open moorland. The climb takes about 45 minutes depending on your pace, and frankly, the rocks at the summit are worth the scramble. On a clear day you can see right across Dartmoor. Midweek is quieter than weekends, and early autumn offers the best light without the summer crowds.

This works beautifully as part of a broader Dartmoor National Park exploration. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby, Bel Tor is an excellent half-day outing - not so gruelling that you'll be knackered for the rest of the day, but challenging enough to feel like you've actually done something. It's free, naturally, and there's no formal timing required.

History buffs might notice the Bronze Age remains scattered across the moor, though they're subtle. Walkers will appreciate the moorland terrain. Families with kids aged eight or above will manage it fine, though very young children might find the final rocky bit tiresome. Allow two to three hours round trip including time at the top.
