Beinn Sgiath

The walk up Beinn Sgiath is a proper Highland scramble that rewards you with views across the Monadhliath mountains. It's not particularly high at 2,107 feet, but the terrain keeps you engaged the whole way - loose scree, a few hand-holds, and enough gradient to work your lungs. From the summit you're looking down at Newtonmore in the valley and across to the bigger peaks dotted around. The approach from the Laggan side takes roughly three hours up and down at a steady pace, though that depends entirely on how confident you are on rocky ground.

This is properly a walker's peak rather than a casual stroll. The views from lower down are pleasant enough, but you won't get the full picture unless you commit to the top. The exposure isn't extreme, but it's enough that you need decent hillwalking experience and appropriate boots - trainers will leave you frustrated. Families with older kids who've done a bit of fell walking will manage fine; younger ones or those after an easy afternoon out should look elsewhere.

It's free to climb, as with most Scottish hills, and September to November tends to offer the clearest skies. Bring a map and compass regardless of how confident you feel - the summit is often wrapped in cloud, and the descent demands proper navigation.
