The climb up Beinn Ruisg near Alexandria is straightforward enough - nothing too technical, but don't expect a stroll either. At 882 metres, it's a decent hill that rewards the effort with proper views across Loch Lomond and the Trossachs beyond. The route itself isn't complicated; locals and visitors tend to approach from the lower slopes and work their way up through moorland and scrubby terrain.

This is walker territory, frankly. You won't see many families with young kids attempting it, mainly because the path gets a bit boggy in places and there's nothing particularly child-friendly about the ascent. But if you've got teenagers who can handle a few hours on their feet, or you're a keen hillwalker looking for something achievable in a half-day, Beinn Ruisg fits the bill.

The real draw is the solitude and the views. You won't be fighting crowds like you would on Ben Lomond, and the panorama from the top justifies the leg work. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and conditions. Weather matters - bring decent kit because exposure is real at the summit, and the wind can come in sharp.

If you're based at Inverbeg Holiday Park or Milarrochy Bay Camping just down the road, this works as a solid day out to break up a Loch Lomond holiday. It's the kind of walk that leaves you properly tired and properly satisfied. Not Instagram-famous, but genuinely worth doing.
