Beinn na Caillich

The walk up Beinn na Caillich is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth the sweat. Standing at 732 metres above Kyle of Lochalsh, this peak commands views across the Sound of Sleat to Skye's Cuillin ridgeline - on a clear day it's properly spectacular, on a grey one it's moody and dramatic instead.

You'll want proper boots and at least two hours if you're not a regular hill-walker. The terrain is rough underfoot with loose stones on the upper sections, and the wind can be fierce when you're exposed. The route starts from around Kyle of Lochalsh itself, climbing steeply through moorland with little shelter on the way up.

This isn't a casual stroll for the family - it's for anyone who actually enjoys hillwalking and wants genuinely good Highland views without committing to a full day in the mountains. The payoff is real: you're not trudging up some tourist-trap path with hundreds of others. You'll spot red deer on the lower slopes if you're quiet, and the light changes constantly across the water below.

If you're camping at Reraig Caravan & Camping Skye just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing when the weather's on your side. Check the forecast first - there's no protection up there, and the mist comes in fast. Allow three hours return including a rest at the top, and bring more water than you think you'll need.
