Beinn Mheadhonach

The walk up Beinn Mheadhonach from near Appin is one of those Scottish hills that doesn't announce itself loudly, but rewards you properly once you're up there. It's modest in height but the views across to Loch Creran and the surrounding Argyll peaks are genuinely excellent - on a clear day you can see right across to the Islands.

What makes it work is the approach. You're walking through proper hillside terrain, not a manicured trail, which means it feels like an actual expedition rather than a tourist box-tick. The summit itself is rocky and exposed, with that satisfying sense of having earned the vantage point. Allow three to four hours return, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take photographs.

This is one for walkers rather than families after a casual stroll. The paths are rough in places and the final push to the summit involves a bit of scrambling. Children with hillwalking experience would manage it fine, but younger kids would likely find it tedious. Autumn and spring are the sweet spot for weather and visibility.

Stay at Creagan Station Tourers just down the road in Appin - it's only six miles away and highly rated. You could easily combine this walk with exploring the wider area, perhaps heading to Oban for a day trip. The caravan club site there is also solid if you want a bigger base. The peak sits well within a proper Argyll hiking trip rather than as a standalone visit.
