Beinn Lagan

The walk up Beinn Lagan starts quietly enough near Cairndow, but the mountain rewards effort with proper views across Argyll's lochs and glens. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb - the kind of peak that appeals to walkers who want summit satisfaction without roping and carabiners.

The route takes you through moorland and over rough terrain, building gradually until you're high enough to see Loch Fyne sprawling below and the broader landscape falling away in all directions. On a clear day, which admittedly isn't guaranteed in this part of Scotland, the visibility is excellent. Count on two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath.

Families with teenagers will find it manageable, though younger children might struggle with the sustained climb. It's the sort of walk where decent boots matter more than fancy kit. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and something to eat.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Stucreoch is closest at just over three miles away, and Argyll Caravan Park is also within easy reach - this makes for a satisfying half-day outing. Pair it with time exploring Loch Fyne's villages or other Argyll hills, and you'll see why people keep returning to this corner of Scotland. The mountain's not famous enough to feel crowded, which is precisely why it's worth the detour.
