Beinn Chaorach

Beinn Chaorach rises sharp and sudden from the landscape near Crianlarich - a proper wee hill that punches above its weight. At just over 600 metres, it's not going to leave you gasping like Ben Nevis would, but the walk packs character and the views across the Trossachs and Breadalbane range are genuinely excellent. The ascent is steep in places, particularly if you tackle it from the south, and takes a solid couple of hours up. Most people allow three to four hours for the round trip.

This is a hill for walkers who want something meaty without committing to a full day's expedition. The path isn't heavily waymarked, so basic navigation skills help - a map and decent weather make all the difference. The summit itself is small and a bit exposed, which means the views feel earned rather than handed to you.

Families with older children will manage fine in decent conditions. Young kids might struggle with the steeper sections. The real payoff comes on a clear day - you'll pick out lochs and distant peaks that make the effort worthwhile.

If you're staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park, it's only 2.4 miles away, making it a logical day out. Spring and autumn offer the best light, though summer brings longer daylight hours. Winter's doable if you're confident with hill walking in Scottish conditions. There's parking near the trailhead, though spaces fill up quickly on weekends.
