Beinn Ceitlein

The walk up Beinn Ceitlein from Kinlochleven is one of those Scottish hill days that rewards you without demanding your life. At 982 metres, it's not a mountain that'll break you - more of a proper afternoon's graft if you're reasonably fit, though the path can be boggy and steep in patches.

What you get for the effort is genuinely cracking. The summit sits right above Kinlochleven, so the views down into the glen are properly dramatic, and on a clear day you can see right across towards Ben Nevis and the Mamores. The West Highland Way runners you'll pass on the lower slopes make it feel like you're on a well-trodden route, but once you're higher up it quietens down.

This is walker territory rather than a casual stroll job. You'll want proper boots, a map, and the weather to actually cooperate - which it often doesn't in the Highlands, so check conditions before you head out. Allow a good four to five hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

If you're camping at Red Squirrel just outside Kinlochleven, this makes a natural hill day to break up a park holiday. The town sits in the glen below, and it's not exactly buzzing, but it's functional for supplies. The real draw here is the walking and the landscape - dramatic, sometimes moody, always Scottish. Not Instagram-ready in the polished sense, but proper mountain country.
