Beinn Bhuidhe Bheag

The walk up Beinn Bhuidhe Bheag is proper straightforward, which makes it all the more surprising how few people tackle it. You're looking at a decent hill rather than a full mountain - 677 metres - but it rewards you with views across the Highlands that justify every muddy step. The route starts accessible enough, then gets properly steep toward the summit, but the payoff is genuine: on a clear day you can pick out Loch Ness and the surrounding ridges stretching away for miles.

This one suits walkers who want a proper graft without needing technical gear or spending all day on the hill. Fit families with decent boots will manage it fine, though you'll want to allow three to four hours return. The terrain is rough and boggy in places - Scottish hills do that - so waterproofs aren't optional.

Based near Inverness, you're well positioned to tackle this as part of a broader Highland ramble. Ardtower Caravan Park sits just over five miles away and makes a sensible base if you're planning multiple walks in the area. The peak itself is free, obviously, and there's no booking needed - just turn up and go, though conditions matter. Spring through early autumn is best; winter brings serious weather and much shorter daylight.
