Beinn a' Chaisteil

The walk up Beinn a' Chaisteil from Crianlarich is shorter than you'd expect, which is precisely why it works so well. At just over 880 metres, this isn't a serious Munro - it's accessible enough for a half-decent morning out without needing to devote your entire day to it.

The path from the village is straightforward at first, then gets genuinely steep near the top. The reward is a proper panoramic view across the Lowlands and towards the southern Highlands - on a clear day you can pick out Ben Vorlich and the high ground beyond. The summit itself is rocky and compact, the kind of spot where you can actually stand still and absorb the landscape rather than constantly looking down at your feet.

This suits hill walkers who want something real but manageable, families with teenagers keen to prove themselves, or anyone staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park looking for a straightforward day's walking. It's not a tourist trap, which means it won't be heaving on a Sunday afternoon.

Allow about three hours return, starting early if you want the best light. There's a small car park near Crianlarich village. The ground can be boggy lower down, so decent boots matter more than fitness. It's free, naturally - it's a Scottish hillside.

If you're based at nearby Tyndrum, this combines well with other walking in the area without requiring a full expedition mentality.
