Beinn a' Bheurlaich

This 1,000-metre peak rises sharply above the landscape east of Inverness, offering one of the most direct hill walks in the area. The ascent is properly steep - you're looking at genuine altitude gain over a short distance - but the reward is a panoramic view across the Moray Firth and back towards Ben Wyvis.

The walk itself takes around two hours up and down from the car park at Coillachan, which sits at a modest elevation already. It's not technical scrambling, just relentless gradient and rough ground underfoot. Bring decent boots and a decent pace. The summit's a bit windswept and exposed, which means the views carry real drama - on a clear day you'll see across to the Black Isle and beyond.

Hill walkers will find it worthwhile as a lunchtime objective. Families with older kids who've done a few peaks before could manage it, though younger ones might struggle with the unrelenting slope. It's not a gentle meander. The main draw is efficiency - you get proper elevation and real views without a full day commitment.

Free to access year-round. Best tackled in decent weather, as the cloud comes in quickly at this height. Spring through autumn works well; winter requires proper hillwalking experience.

If you're based at Ardtower Caravan Park or Go Glamping at Loch Ness, this sits as a solid half-day excursion. It's close enough to Inverness for a quick breakfast in town before heading out. Not the most iconic Highland peak, but it's there when you want a proper walk without travelling far.
