Beesands St Andrew's Church

The little church sits right on the shingle beach at Beesands, which is odd enough on its own. St Andrew's isn't your typical village church tucked behind a village green - it's practically on the sand, with the South Hams coastline forming its entire eastern view. The building itself dates back centuries but was rebuilt after a storm in the 1600s took out the original, which tells you something about how seriously the locals took their spiritual life down here.

Inside, it's properly simple. Stone walls, a small nave, the sort of place where you can hear every footstep and genuinely feel the weight of time. There's something moving about a church that's weathered literal centuries of coastal battering. The setting is what makes it special rather than any architectural showiness - you're standing in a medieval space while the sea rolls past outside.

Walkers doing the South Devon coastal path practically stumble into it, which is the best way to visit. Families with children won't spend long here unless they're genuinely interested in old churches, but the beach location makes it worth a quick stop between Kingsbridge and the water. Allow fifteen minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the reflective type.
