Beehive Hut

The Beehive Hut sits just outside Exeter, a proper oddity that stops most people in their tracks. It's an Iron Age roundhouse - essentially a stone dome with a single entrance, built around 2,000 years ago and reconstructed to show how people actually lived back then. You walk inside and immediately get it: the low doorway, the cramped circular space, the smell of earth and thatch. No electricity, no running water, just survival.

History enthusiasts will spend a good hour here picking apart the construction and imagining domestic life in pre-Roman Britain. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes enough unless they're properly into archaeology. The site doesn't require a guide - just turn up and look around.

It's free and accessible year-round, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Don't expect interpretation boards or a café. This is raw historical archaeology, which is exactly why it works.

If you're staying at Dartmoor National Park just three miles south, the Beehive Hut makes a quick detour on the way back to Exeter. It's the sort of place that resets your brain about how people lived - far more effective than reading a textbook. Worth half an hour of your time, genuinely.
