It's the kind of place where families with young kids can spend a morning without feeling they've driven two hours for disappointment.

What's here is straightforward: a few waymarked paths through beech and oak, a visitor facility for the basics (coffee, loos, that sort of thing), and enough space to let people scatter in different directions. The terrain is gentle rather than challenging, which means pushchairs manage it fine and anyone over seventy won't be swearing at their knees. Most visitors do an hour or two circling back to the car park, though the keener walkers head deeper into the forest proper.

Lydney is the nearest town, just a few miles south, but honestly you won't need it - Beechenhurst has what you came for. If you're based at Whitemead Forest Park or Bracelands Campsite, both within easy reach, this is a natural morning or afternoon slot rather than a full day. Free to wander the forest itself, though there may be parking charges - worth checking before you go.

It works best for people who actually like walking rather than those hoping to tick a box. Kids who'll happily splash about in mud and find sticks will love it. If your idea of woodland time is a coffee shop with a view, head somewhere else.
