Beech Loch

The water at Beech Loch sits dark and still, ringed by mature trees that lean right down to the shoreline. It's a proper little freshwater loch just outside Thornhill, the sort of place that catches you off-guard with how peaceful it is given how close it is to civilization.

You can walk right round it if you've got the legs for it - the path isn't always obvious, mind you, and some sections get a bit boggy depending on rainfall. The main appeal here is straightforward: beautiful waterside walking with views back across the water to the tree line. Early morning tends to be best when the mist hangs low and you've got the place mostly to yourself.

Families with young kids might find an hour's walk enough before boredom sets in unless they're keen birdwatchers - there's reasonable birding here, particularly ducks and the occasional visiting osprey if you're lucky. Serious hikers could stretch this into a half-day outing if they combine it with nearby walks in the area.

The loch works well as a breathing space if you're staying at Penpont Holiday Park just down the road. Free access, as far as I can tell, and no obvious facilities on-site, so bring what you need. Go in spring or early autumn when the light's proper lovely on the water and the midges aren't at their worst. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't expect dramatic scenery - it's intimate and quiet rather than spectacular.
