Bearwood Recreation Ground

The moment you walk into Bearwood, you're surrounded by proper woodland - the kind where towering pines block out half the sky and the ground's soft with decades of needles. It's a nature reserve just outside Wokingham that feels genuinely quiet, even when it's busy.

You're here to walk. There are trails threading through mixed woodland with occasional clearings where you might spot deer or hear woodpeckers if you're lucky. The paths are well-maintained but don't expect obvious signposting - bring a map or phone reception. It's the sort of place where an hour turns into two because you keep following paths to see what's round the next bend.

Families with older kids will get on fine here. Younger ones might flag after 45 minutes unless they're keen explorers. It's not a destination on its own - more of a proper morning walk that justifies getting out of the caravan. The reserve has real ecological value, so respect for wildlife matters. Keep dogs under control and stick to paths.

Bearwood works brilliantly as an add-on to Wellington Country Park, which is only five miles away. Stay at Wellington, spend an afternoon at Bearwood stretching your legs, then head back for the lake and facilities. Free access appears to be standard for nature reserves like this, though always check locally.

The best time is spring or early autumn when the wood feels alive. Summer gets warm and muggy between the trees. Winter's fine if you don't mind muddy boots.
