Bearsden Roman Bathhouse | Antonine Wall

What remains here is the best-preserved bathhouse on the entire Antonine Wall - that ambitious frontier the Empire pushed north of Hadrian's Wall around 142 AD. You're standing in the ruins of a proper Roman bathing complex: hypocausts (those underfloor heating systems), cold plunges, hot rooms. The stones tell the story if you know how to read them.

It's not flashy. There are no reconstructions or interactive exhibits. What you get is the raw archaeology - foundations, channel systems, bits of wall. History types will find it genuinely absorbing. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking if they can go to the cafe. Walkers on the Antonine Wall trail actually pass right through here, so it fits naturally into a longer hike rather than as a standalone pilgrimage.

Glasgow's just eight miles south, which makes this easy to slot into a broader Scottish Lowlands trip. The WHW Hotel & Campsite sits only five miles away if you're basing yourself locally. Free to visit, as far as I can tell - there's no visitor centre charging entry fees. Early morning or late afternoon light does wonders for photography. The site sits quietly on the edge of suburbia, which sounds dodgy but actually works: you get the archaeology without the crowds that plague other Roman sites.

Worth an hour of your time? Absolutely. But come with realistic expectations about what "ruins" actually look like.
