Bears of the Rising Sun

This small Essex zoo focuses entirely on bears from across Asia, which is refreshingly different from the usual multi-species approach. You'll find Japanese black bears, sun bears, and Asiatic species in what feels like a proper specialist operation rather than a sprawling safari park. It's genuinely educational if you care about conservation - the staff actually know their stuff and aren't just herding crowds through.

Family groups with younger children will get the most from it. An hour to ninety minutes is realistic, maybe two if your kids are absolutely transfixed by bears. Teenagers might find it a bit limited unless they're already into wildlife. The proximity to Colchester makes it a sensible half-day addition to a longer Essex break rather than a destination in itself.

Stay at Colchester Country Park if you want a traditional base - it's only 2.4 miles away and solid for families. Swallows Field's glamping pods are closer at 2.8 miles and more of a treat if your budget allows. Both give you easy access to town attractions as well as this place.

Worth the detour? If you're camping locally and have bear-mad kids, absolutely. Adults without particular wildlife interests might find it rather narrow in scope. Check opening hours before you head out - small zoos are sometimes closed mid-week or in winter.
