Beacon Fell

The walk up Beacon Fell takes about 40 minutes from the car park, and it's one of those Lancashire hills that doesn't look like much until you're actually up there. The summit sits at 873 feet, which means the views across the Ribble Valley are genuinely worth the leg work - on a clear day you can see the Bowland fells stretching away to the north, and Preston sprawling below feels properly distant despite being just a few miles off.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical climb. The paths are well-maintained and the gradient, whilst noticeable, isn't brutal. Families with older kids (eight upwards) will manage it fine. Younger children might find the final push tedious, though there's a visitor centre near the car park if anyone needs a break. Walkers heading for the Preston area will find this a useful half-day outing that doesn't require full mountaineering kit.

The fell itself is moorland - open and windswept, with patches of bracken and heather. There's a trig point at the top and a proper sense of achievement, even if the height is modest by Peak District standards. Winter visits can be atmospheric but muddy; autumn is probably the sweet spot.

It breaks up caravan time without eating a full day. Free to walk, and no facilities beyond the car park, so bring water.
