Batsford Ice House

An ice house is one of those Victorian curiosities that makes you stop and think about how people actually lived before freezers. This one at Batsford, just outside Moreton-in-Marsh, is a proper brick-built underground chamber where ice was stored through the summer months - cut from frozen ponds in winter and packed down with sawdust to keep food cool. It's small, frankly. You can walk around it in ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you're really interested in the mechanics of it all. The actual viewing is limited since it's largely a sunken structure, but there's something oddly satisfying about standing above these old ice stores and realising how much ingenuity went into solving everyday problems without electricity.

Historians and anyone with a soft spot for Cotswold rural life will find it worthwhile. Kids might find it a bit of a letdown unless they're already keen on Victorian domestic technology - it won't hold their attention for long. Free to visit, thankfully, and it works well as a quick stop between other Gloucestershire attractions rather than a destination in itself.
