Bathpool Country Park

The pools at Bathpool aren't what you'd expect from the name - there's water, yes, but this is proper nature reserve territory just outside Stoke-on-Trent. The real draw is the mosaic of woodland, grassland and wetland that makes it genuinely worth a morning's exploration. You'll spot everything from dragonflies to occasional kingfishers if you're lucky, and the footpaths loop around in a way that feels less manicured than some country parks. Families with primary-school-age kids will get a solid couple of hours out of it - there's enough to poke about in without it feeling like a forced march. Older walkers appreciate the quieter corners and the bird life. The site's free to access and there's reasonable parking, though it fills up quickly on weekends. Spring and early summer are best for wildlife spotting; autumn's lovely too if you don't mind the muddy stretches. If you're camping at Castle Camping just down the road, this becomes a genuinely useful spot to break up a rainy afternoon or a morning before heading elsewhere. Tipsy Tree Glamping and Sky View Caravan Park are also close enough that Bathpool works as part of a proper Staffordshire circuit. Don't expect dramatic views or dramatic anything really - it's understated, which is exactly why it works. The paths are accessible enough for most fitness levels, though bring proper boots after rain.
