Bathampton Down

The walk up Bathampton Down rewards you with proper countryside views across the Avon Valley, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Cotswolds. It's a straightforward climb from Bradford-on-Avon - takes about 45 minutes to the top depending on your pace - and the footpath is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost.

What you get is a grassy ridge with little fanfare. No café, no visitor centre, no rope barriers. Just a high point with the sort of vista that makes you understand why people bother walking uphill. The wildflowers can be decent in late spring, and it's the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than traffic. Walkers will find it satisfying without being punishing. Families with young legs will manage it fine, though the final stretch is a bit steep for what it is.

Timing matters. Go early to dodge the weekend crowds, and frankly, miss it in deep winter when the mud gets grim. The surrounding countryside holds several decent holiday parks - Campwell Farm and Bath Mill Lodge Retreat are both within three miles, making this an easy half-day outing if you're based nearby. It pairs well with exploring Bradford-on-Avon's weaving heritage and the canal walks that run through the town.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow an hour and a half if you want to linger at the top rather than just tag it and turn back.
