Bath Yard Canal Basin

The canal basin at Bath Yard is one of those quiet corners of Leicestershire that most people driving through Swadlincote completely miss. It's a proper working waterway - narrowboats moored along the towpath, water still and dark, willow trees hanging over the banks like they've been there for centuries. Not dramatic, but genuinely peaceful.

You can walk the towpath in either direction for as long as you fancy. The stretch is flat and easy underfoot, so it works well for families with younger kids or anyone not keen on hill walking. The real appeal is the slowness of it - there's something about canal-side walks that makes you actually notice things. Dragonflies, herons if you're lucky, the reflections in the water. It's the kind of place where half an hour feels properly restorative rather than rushed.

The basin itself is small enough to take in within an hour, but the towpath extends beyond if you want a longer outing. Free to access, naturally - no gates, no fees. Best visited during spring and summer when the water life is most active and the bankside vegetation softens the view.

If you're staying at New Forest View or Fire & Stars Woodland, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading elsewhere in the region. It's not the sort of attraction that warrants a day trip on its own, but as part of a broader Leicestershire itinerary exploring the canal network, it's genuinely worthwhile. Swadlincote itself is walkable from the caravan sites and offers the usual town amenities if you need them.
