Bath Pool

The water's remarkably clear when you first arrive at Bath Pool, which sits just outside Stoke-on-Trent in Cheshire. It's a proper working gravel pit that's been transformed into something genuinely pleasant - the kind of place where you realise someone's actually bothered to make it accessible rather than just leaving a hole in the ground.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, and there's decent bird-watching potential if you're patient. Anglers camp here regularly, which tells you something about the water quality. The surrounding land is open and flat - not dramatic, but peaceful in the way that industrial landscapes sometimes are when they've been reclaimed. It's the sort of spot where you notice things: the reflections on the water, how the light changes across the day.

Walkers will find it a straightforward half-hour circuit, nothing strenuous. Families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes before restlessness sets in. History enthusiasts won't find much - this is about the landscape itself, not what happened here centuries ago.

If you're based at Castle Camping or Sky View Caravan Park nearby, it's worth the short drive for a morning walk. The real appeal is the quietness. You won't fight crowds here. It won't take your breath away, but it's a proper bit of Midlands countryside that works well as a break from the usual lakeside circuit. Access appears to be free, though opening hours aren't clearly advertised - early morning or late afternoon tends to be when it's most rewarding.
