Bath Abbey

The west front of Bath Abbey stops you dead. Those vast stone windows - they're genuinely extraordinary, reaching almost to the roofline with barely any wall between them. You're standing in the heart of Bath town centre, surrounded by Georgian terraces, and suddenly there's this perpendicular Gothic explosion of glass and carved stone.

Inside, the abbey is surprisingly intimate. High ceilings, pale stone, light flooding through those enormous windows. The fan vaulting is intricate without being fussy. Most visitors spend 30 to 45 minutes wandering around, reading the memorials and tomb stones - there are hundreds of them underfoot. It's busy, always, but the space feels calm rather than crowded.

Admission is free, though they're keen on donations. You'll find it signposted everywhere in Bath itself, right next to the Roman Baths. If you're staying at Bath Mill Lodge Retreat or Campwell Farm - both within a couple of miles - you're perfectly placed for a morning visit before exploring the rest of the Georgian city. Families with younger children might find it a bit sedate after twenty minutes, but teenagers interested in architecture or history will get proper value from it.

The abbey works best as part of a wider Bath morning rather than a standalone trip. Pair it with the Roman Baths, a wander through the Circus and Royal Crescent, maybe lunch on the high street. Don't expect isolation - this is Bath's busiest spot - but do expect to be genuinely impressed by the engineering and ambition on display.
