Bassenthwaite Hill

The walk up Bassenthwaite Hill from Keswick isn't a bruiser - more of a proper leg-stretcher that rewards you with views across the lake and north towards Skiddaw. You're looking at roughly an hour and a half up, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The path itself is straightforward, nothing technical, which means families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find the climb tedious.

What makes this worth doing is the perspective. From the top you get Bassenthwaite Lake spread out below you, and on a clear day the vista extends far enough to feel like you've actually earned it. The fell itself is quiet - you won't fight crowds like you do on some of the honeypots around Keswick. That said, it's not a day-long adventure. Three hours total if you're leisurely, less if you're keen.

It sits nicely into a wider walking week using Kestrel Lodge or Skiddaw View as your base - both are excellent spots, and you can easily string together a few fell walks without having to move your caravan. The weather window matters here more than most peaks; cloud comes in fast and the views vanish entirely. Go early in the day when you've got the best shot at clear skies. Free to walk, naturally - just park sensibly near Keswick and head out.
