Barracks Visitor Centre

Standing on the edge of Burnham-on-Sea's coastline, this former military installation tells the story of Somerset's wartime defences through displays and exhibits housed in original barrack buildings. The visitor centre focuses on the area's role during both World Wars, with particular emphasis on coastal protection and the thousands of servicemen who were stationed here.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to absorb, though families might discover younger children lose interest after the first hour or so. The preserved buildings themselves are quite atmospheric - you get a real sense of what life must have been like for the soldiers based here.

Location-wise, it works well as a rainy day alternative if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Brean or Burnham. Warren Farm Holiday Centre and Golden Sands Holiday Park are both within easy reach, making it a convenient stop during a Somerset coast break. The centre sits close enough to the seafront that you can easily combine a visit with a walk along Burnham's famous lighthouse pier.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to read everything properly. The staff are knowledgeable locals who clearly care about preserving this slice of military heritage, though opening times seem to vary so it's worth checking before making a special trip.
