Barr Lolaich

The walk up Barr Lolaich isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're not paying attention. Starting from near Tarbert, this Argyll peak climbs to just over 2,000 feet and rewards the effort with proper views across the Kintyre Peninsula and towards the islands. On a clear day - and you'll need one - the sight lines stretch far enough to make the huffing worthwhile.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble, so experienced walkers with decent boots will manage it in a couple of hours. Families with older kids who don't mind a slog will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. The terrain is moorland and rough grass, so bring waterproofs regardless of what the forecast says - this is Argyll, after all.

The main draw is honestly the isolation. You won't find crowds, and the views justify the climb. It's not a"bag it and go" moment - you need to commit time and energy. Worth it if you're already based in the area for a park holiday at The Gather, which sits just down the road near Tarbert. Use it as a proper half-day adventure rather than a quick detour.
