Drumroamin Farm, just down the road near Newton Stewart, makes a solid base if you're planning a countryside week - you can spend a morning poking around ruins, afternoon hiking the local paths.

Go in autumn or spring when the crowds genuinely won't exist. The exposed position means it's bleak in winter rain, which is actually rather atmospheric if you're prepared for it. Practical note: wear decent boots. The ground around the tower is boggy.
