Barnards Farm

Barnards Farm sits just outside Billericay, a proper Essex landmark that's been working the land since way back. It's a proper working farm - you get the real thing here, not some sanitised attraction. Animals dotted about, fields doing their seasonal thing, and enough space to let kids actually run around without feeling like you're herding them through some theme park queue.

The farm pulls in families mostly, and fair enough - children do respond well to seeing actual livestock rather than pictures of them. But it's equally good for anyone who wants to see how farms actually operate rather than just buying their veg shrink-wrapped from a supermarket. The walk around is straightforward, nothing too taxing, and you can easily spend a couple of hours here without feeling rushed.

What makes it work for a park holiday is the proximity to Barleylands Campsite just 4.5 miles away. You can base yourself there and pop over to the farm without a major expedition. The combination works well - days at the park, then a half-day at Barnards Farm breaks things up nicely for families who'd go stir-crazy otherwise.

Admission details are sparse online, so ring ahead before you go - nothing worse than rocking up expecting to find opening hours that don't exist. Worth the detour if you're in the area and keen on working farms, but don't make it your only reason to visit Essex.
