Barleylands Farm Park

The working farm spreads across proper countryside just east of Billericay, and it's one of those places where you can actually see animals doing what they do rather than standing about waiting for visitors. There's a farm shop stocked with local produce, a tearoom, and enough space to walk about without feeling hemmed in by crowds.

Kids will get a genuine kick out of it - no theme park nonsense, just real farming happening around them. The animals are there because it's a functioning operation, not because someone's designed an attraction. You can watch the farm in action during visiting hours, and there's enough to keep under-tens occupied for a couple of hours without breaking the bank.

The location works brilliantly if you're camping at Barleylands Campsite right next door - genuinely can't get more convenient than that. Even from Stuarts Wood Campsite four miles away it's an easy drive for a morning visit. The farm shop alone makes it worth a call if you're self-catering and want proper local eggs or vegetables rather than supermarket fare.

Frankly, it's the sort of place that punches above its weight. No fancy attractions, no Instagram sets, just a genuine working farm where you can see what actually goes into food production. Depending on the season and what's happening in the fields, it could be worth an hour or a whole morning. Ring ahead to check what's on when you visit - the rhythm of farm life means it's not the same experience in January as it is in July.
