Bargain Wood

Walking into Bargain Wood feels like stepping into proper Forest of Dean territory - dense, quiet, and the kind of place where you actually notice the difference between oak and beech. It's a working forest near Lydney, with trails that wind through mixed woodland, and on a decent day the light filters through the canopy in that way that makes you understand why people get romantic about English forests.

This is fundamentally a walkers' spot. Bring sturdy boots - the ground can be boggy - and give yourself at least two hours if you want to do it justice. The trails aren't signposted to death, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood and map-reading skills. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. Families with young children might find it a bit relentless after an hour, unless they're the type who'll chase rabbits for hours.

It's free to access, which is the main appeal if you're camping nearby. Forest and Wye Valley Caravan and Camping Site sits just three miles away, making this a logical morning walk before heading elsewhere. Whitemead Forest Park, six miles south, has more facilities and attractions if you need a softer landing - but Bargain Wood is where you come when you want actual forest, not a manicured park experience.

The real value is proximity to Lydney and the wider Dean explorations. It's not worth driving hours for on its own, but as part of a longer forest ramble? Absolutely.
